Student Leader, Honors and Academics
Student Leader
At Commencement...
Yes, that’s me on the jumbo screen at graduation. As the head of two major clubs at Brown, I was honored to be one of the 20 seniors out of a graduating class of 1,643 invited to say a few words to fellow graduates via the “Expressions of Gratitude” video that was broadcast during our socially-distanced commencement ceremony.
Presenting to the President’s Council...
The topic was "Student and Recent Graduate Perspectives: Sustaining Excellence during COVID-19," and I was one of the three students invited to present their work to the final meeting of the President’s Advisory and Women's Leadership Council at Brown.
Honors Thesis
Writing an Honors Thesis is the ultimate academic challenge of a college life and was perhaps the high point of my entire life. The process of researching and writing a magnum opus during one’s senior year brings with it great lessons in discipline, determination, time-management, and -- to paraphrase Socrates and Plato -- knowing thyself. It’s an intellectual and emotional experience that combines everything you’ve learned and speaks to who you are. It was an exceptional personal and academic journey.
My thesis, Chasing History and Home in Rome, is a historical fiction novella (25,000 words/100 pages) employing modernist conventions that challenge representations of reality and concepts of time and consciousness, inspired by the pioneering literary experiments of Woolf and Joyce.
Teaching Assistant to a Legend
Professor Hazeltine is Brown’s most beloved teacher who has retired twice but returned each time to teach a full courseload anyhow. I was lucky to be one of his longstanding teaching assistants for Brown’s foremost business class, “Management of Industrial and Nonprofit Organizations and Managerial Decision Making,” guiding students through weekly Case Studies discussing marketing, strategy, finance, operations, organizational structures, and human relations. Professor Hazeltine is trying out retirement again – let’s see how long it lasts for this time.
Profiled by Van Wickle Ventures
Each month, the Brown organization, Van Wickle Ventures Fund, selects a student they feel is “absolutely killing it” to profile in their monthly bulletin — and I was proud to be selected for the March 2021 issue.
Van Wickle Ventures (VWV) is a student-run venture fund that invests across all stages in Brown and Rhode Island School of Design-affiliated companies. Inspired by the characteristically Brown spirit of innovation, VWV backs the university’s groundbreaking students, faculty, and alumni.
